The magic number is 10,000, huh? Maybe you have heard the recent guidelines about walking 10,000 steps per day and the importance of being active. How far is 10,000 steps anyway? The average person’s stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile, and 10,000 steps is close to 5 miles. Walking can be done almost anywhere, at any time, and in any weather (especially now summer’s on the way). It’s also a great way to get from A to B, which means you can fit walking into your daily routine http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/loseweight/Pages/10000stepschallenge.aspx

Just like it was in the old days a pole is a symbol of unity, tradition and pride. It represents a family’s histories, relationships, stories, beliefs and experiences. A traditional totem pole shows animals and mythical figures associated with a family or friends. The word totem is derived from the Ojibwe word odoodem, “his kinship group”. We came across this modern day totem in Geralton, Western Australia. We love the messages, must be time for a group hug x

Our children really are the future. Whales eating baked beans now that would be a lot of gas ha ha protecting the planet is everyone’s job and these awesome kids are attempting to save the Kimberley region of Western Australia! The Kimberley is a vast and very sparsely populated region of Australia. The landscape of the region is as immense as it is beautiful. Despite its vast natural wonders, there is much of the Kimberley flora and fauna which remains unexplored and little understood. The Kimberley is home to thousands of plant and animal species, many of them highly restricted or specialised, whilst some are threatened, vulnerable or endangered. Put simply, there remains so much to learn about the region that …

It’s easy! Cycling is often the easiest way to get around our city – you can ride quickly and directly to the shops, to school or to work, and not have to worry about parking the car. It’s fun! Cycling is a really enjoyable way to get around and spend your time, whether you’re riding alone, or with your friends or family. Take a picnic and make a day of it! It’s fast! During the rush hour, cycling can be up to twice as fast as going by car. Most places in a city can be reached by bike in around 30 minutes. It’s free! With a bike there’s no fuel to buy (apart from your own food!), no road tax or parking fees. …

Here’s a great little article from last year suggesting UK children are losing contact with nature at a “dramatic” rate, and their health and education are suffering http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17495032 here at The Green Marine we are determined to reverse this trend and reconnect our children with each other and the natural world around them. Keep watching this space peeps x
