Did you know? The landing of NASA’s new Mars rover, Curiosity, is only days away and will be broadcast live in New York City’s Times Square. Viewable on the two giant LED screens, touchdown is scheduled to take place at 1:31am EDT on Monday morning. Officially named the “Mars Science Laboratory,” the rover will land in Gale Crater and will spend at least two years searching for habitats that could have supported life in the past. Curiosity is the heaviest and most complex rover ever built, and requires the most complicated (and dangerous) landing procedure ever attempted. Check out this NASA video explaining the rover’s “Seven Minutes of Terror”. Due to the finite speed of light and the great distance to …

An asteroid that is 400m (1,300ft) wide passed by Earth much to the delight of astronomers. Although invisible to the naked eye, scientists said they spotted strange structures on Asteroid 2005 YU55′s surface as it spun past at 30,000mph. We think they caught a glimpse of the Carbon Cowboy. It was the closest an asteroid has been to Earth in 200 years. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-15572634

Scientists are starting to consider planet-scale engineering projects to slow the pace of climate change, anything from causing massive plankton growth in the ocean to putting a giant mirror in space above Greenland to stop ice from melting. These ideas to alter the earth’s environment at large scale, called “geoengineering,” are increasingly being articulated and seriously evaluated even though they are likely to be controversial…but no more controversial than the damage the Carbon Cowboy can unleash!

Science and space are both fascinating subjects, there are so many amazing things to learn and discover. Thankfully we humans have a lot of time to research, the average person only sleeps for about 35% of the day compared to 80% for armadillos and sloths, now that’s amazing! And another thing…you might have heard on the news about a large satellite that is heading our way back to earth? Well while North America appears to be off the hook, scientists are scrambling to pinpoint exactly where and when a dead NASA climate satellite will plummet back to Earth. The 5,440-kilogram, bus-sized satellite is expected to break into more than a hundred pieces as it plunges through the atmosphere, most of it …
