The magic number is 10,000, huh? Maybe you have heard the recent guidelines about walking 10,000 steps per day and the importance of being active. How far is 10,000 steps anyway? The average person’s stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile, and 10,000 steps is close to 5 miles. Walking can be done almost anywhere, at any time, and in any weather (especially now summer’s on the way). It’s also a great way to get from A to B, which means you can fit walking into your daily routine http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/loseweight/Pages/10000stepschallenge.aspx

Just like it was in the old days a pole is a symbol of unity, tradition and pride. It represents a family’s histories, relationships, stories, beliefs and experiences. A traditional totem pole shows animals and mythical figures associated with a family or friends. The word totem is derived from the Ojibwe word odoodem, “his kinship group”. We came across this modern day totem in Geralton, Western Australia. We love the messages, must be time for a group hug x

“As the loss of wildlife and habitats continues apace, both in the UK and globally, and as evidence suggests growing numbers of children are missing out on the mental and physical health benefits of spending time in nature, the place of the natural environment in the national curriculum is more critical than ever.” Tony Juniper

Did you know? Those who prefer to eat locally grown/produced food sometimes call themselves locavores or localvores. This term began circulation around August 2005 in the San Francisco area, when a number of “foodies” launched a website, Locavores.com, after being inspired by the book “Coming Home to Eat” by ecologist Gary Paul Nabham. More recently, an “invasivore” movement has emerged as a subset of the locavore movement, which encourages the consumption of non-indigenous invasive species with the intent of controlling harmful populations. Food for thought…
