Did you know? The landing of NASA’s new Mars rover, Curiosity, is only days away and will be broadcast live in New York City’s Times Square. Viewable on the two giant LED screens, touchdown is scheduled to take place at 1:31am EDT on Monday morning.
Officially named the “Mars Science Laboratory,” the rover will land in Gale Crater and will spend at least two years searching for habitats that could have supported life in the past. Curiosity is the heaviest and most complex rover ever built, and requires the most complicated (and dangerous) landing procedure ever attempted. Check out this NASA video explaining the rover’s “Seven Minutes of Terror”. Due to the finite speed of light and the great distance to Mars, space fans will have to wait a full seven minutes to learn if Curiosity has landed safely.
